I haven't had a metal suitcase before and have just bought either soft-sided ones for domestic travel and rigid GRP type ones for international use. I have a range of brands, from cheap and cheerful to more 'seasoned' ones (but nothing too fancy like Goyard or Globetrotter!)
I'm really impressed with the build quality of this case though. It has a flawless finish to the aluminium and all the rivets holding it together seem to be linear and tightly applied. The wheels are a bit larger than average and the soft treads do make a bit less noise when trundling across tarmac pavements. They swivel through 360 degrees too, something that isn't made too clear in the advert photos. This means that you can haul it along at any angle you like.
There are two handles as well - each of them with a softer plastic grip on the underside, along with the adjustable extending trolley-style grip, which is an excellent length, and ideal for my 5ft 10 height. You also have that 'TSA Approved' locking system, which essentially means that US customs can open your case and inspect your unmentionables without destroying your property. You get two cards with the case which explain how to set the combination code and this is very easy to do, once you've found a magnifying glass to read the tiny wee print.
On the inside you'll find that the case is fully lined and you get a removable shirt carrier along with a dry bag, although this is fixed to the interior. A nice touch is the see-through cover provided with the case. Although it's not the thickest or most robust in the world, once fitted, it should keep the case free from light scratches across most of the main surfaces.
I think that tis would be an ideal case for occasions where you're taking things like camera equipment with you on a flight as hand luggage but as an alternative to GRP cases which are prone to flexing, this would give you much more security and peace of mind. It is slightly heavier than GRP though, so you'd have to mind your weight limits. Overall, it's a great small cabin case and in my opinion, well worth the money.

It’s exceeded all my expectations! I went for this one as it has the built in TSA approved locks. These work perfectly, I’ve used separate ones in the past and I always end up losing them. It’s been a lifesaver to have the built in.
I’ve also never had a hard shell suitcase before, I’ve always had the soft material and they have just never stood the test of time. I’m officially a hard shell suitcase user from now on! It’s so durable, I travelled abroad and it doesn’t have a single mark on it.
Finally the multifunctional pockets are so amazing for organisation! I could keep my shoes away from my clothes and its so spacious, there was plenty of room for everything I needed.
I would highly recommend this Opal Living suitcase, I wouldn’t reach for anything else now!
